Wizards of the Watchtower
The enigmatic psych rock duo The Psychic Circle return with their third album, Wizards of the Watchtower via Library of the Occult Records. Comprised of Tom McDowell (Dream Division, Library of the Occult Records) and Jack Harris, the group once again conjures dark electronic krautrock, doom-laden psych, and motorik grooves, channeling a sound that is equal parts hypnotic and heavy.Â
A ritualistic blend of Black Sabbathâs crushing riffage and Canâs relentless drive, Wizards of the Watchtower is a journey into the occult side of psych rock. Across 11 sprawling tracks, the album conjures a sound that is both ominous and otherworldly - a doom-laced, groove-heavy sonic ritual that bends time and space.Â
John Hubner of Complex Distractions describes the album as âdark and groove-heavy⊠showing what would have been if Sleep had found solace in Hawkwind instead of Sabbath.â Tracks like âForgotten Goblinâ evoke a âdoom baroqueâatmosphere, while âSword Against Sorceryâ sounds like âUriah Heep and Black Mountain coming together in a fuzz guitar light  show.â Meanwhile, the title track, âWizards of the Watchtowerâ, is a thrilling nod to Scorpionsâ âSails of Charonâ reimagined through the lens of a 70s Giallo film.
