Signed to Dome Records at just 19 years old, the prodigiously talented, gospel-schooled Wolverhampton-born singer began working on her debut album while still at university. The original white label release of her debut single âFlavour Of The Old Schoolâ in late 1994 caused an immediate, massive street-level buzz, going on to become a certified UK swing anthem.
Working with street soul studio wizards 2B3, British hip hop pioneers Blak Twang and more, the 1995 release of 'The B-Funk' was heralded by the UK black music press as the arrival of a landmark new voice and âthe best British soul album everâ (Echoes), with Beverley later winning the R&B Act Of The Year prize at the 1996 Black Music Awards.
In the decades since, Knight has gone on to work with everyone from Take That to Prince, sell out countless tours and score over a dozen Top 40 hits, progressing from street soul sensation to acclaimed West End musical theatre mainstay. Meanwhile 'The B-Funk' has continued to grow in stature with the R&B cognoscenti: key cut âMutual Feelingâ being recently sampled on Playboi Carti and Kendrick Lamarâs 2025 US smash âBackd00râ.
