Something For The Longing - Scottish Independent Pop 1985-1999
Following its blossoming in the post-punk era, by the mid-80s, the Scottish indie scene had become a sprawling, glorious network of bands, fanzines, club nights and record shops. When the NME issued its now-mythic ‘C86’ cassette in 1986, Scottish music featured heavily, setting the tone for a couple of decades of brilliant and eclectic music.
From the noise-pop of The Jesus And Mary Chain and the effortless retro cool of Primal Scream, through the kawaii stylings of Bis and the sophisticated pop of Belle And Sebastian, to the dour post rock of Arab Strap and the melting pot eclecticism of The Beta Band, Something For The Longing pulls together a snapshot of that time and place. Compiled chronologically, this is a story whose narrative takes in familiar faces, mythical scenesters, bona fide rock gods, singularly minded labels and, above all, the inventive musical exploits of a nation punching well above its weight.
Complete with a sleevenote essay and band biographies by curator Grant McPhee, archival imagery and a handful of unreleased recordings provided especially by the artists, 'Something For The Longing' is a must-hear for fans and collectors of the '80s and '90s indie scenes, anybody who was there and then, and the Caledophile in your life.
