Something For Everyone
Sammy Davis JR was a singer, actor, comedian, dancer, TV host and noted amateur photographer. But, he is perhaps best remembered for his role in the iconic film Oceanâs 11 where he played a member of the Rat Pack alongside lifelong friends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, a role that he lived in real life.
In 1969 he had a #11 Billboard hit with âIâve Gotta Be Meâ after which he signed to the mighty Motown Records in order to reach a younger audience.
The album was released internationally in 1970 and showcased Davis at his smokinâ best covering âSpinning Wheelâ and âWichita Linemanâ with his trademark brassy tenor. At the time Davis was a top- draw act in Las Vegas alongside Elvis with whom he developed a close relationship. He appeared in Presleyâs concert film Thatâs The Way It Is and included a superb version of âIn The Ghettoâ on the album. The set also includes the Motown classics âFor Once In My Lifeâ, popularised by Stevie Wonderâ, and âYouâve Made Me So Very Happyâ by Brenda Holloway, co- written by the Holloway sisters and Frank âDo I Love Youâ Wilson.
Sammy Davis Jr was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement and his legacy lives on through his screen performances and his prolific recorded output.
