Smart Bomb

Founded in Hamburg in the late 1970s by singer and guitarist Frank Z., Abwärts quickly rose to prominence with their legendary festival performance at Hamburg's Markthalle (“In Die Zukunft” / 1979) and the release of their “Computerstaat EP” and debut album “Amok Koma” (both 1980), Abwärts quickly became style-defining protagonists of the German punk, wave, and experimental scene. Since then, in addition to various singles and EPs, the band has released twelve LPs to date, working with producers such as Nick Launay (Nick Cave), Jon Caffery (Die Toten Hosen), and Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica).

After Abwärts released a reissue of their cult single “Computerstaat” in the spring, “Smart Bomb” is now finally the band's new musical statement (four years after their last successful album “Krautrock”), featuring singer Frank Z., guitarist Rodrigo Gonzalez, bassist Björn Werra, and drummer Martin Kessler.

Produced in an extremely straightforward manner by Rod Gonzalez and Frank Z., the band is in top form on their new album, delivering eleven extremely powerful, punk-influenced rock songs with a (mostly) hard-hitting melodic style – including a cover version of the Andrew Sisters classic “Rum & Coca Cola” – accompanied by Frank Z.'s usual bitingly sarcastic lyrics.
