Midnight Love
frequently overlooked, marvin gaye's 'in our lifetime?' was recorded in 1979, hot on the heels of his legendary divorce album, 'here, my dear'. gaye originally envisioned a 'party' album in the vein of his 1977 'got to give it up' single and almost released one called 'love man'. after some consideration, gaye scrapped the sessions, recorded at odyssey studios, and instead decided to record a work that played on his spiritual concerns. the resulting 'in our lifetime?' was a hybrid of both albums, perhaps gaye's most successful marriage of the secular and spiritual on one release. 'ego tripping out', the first single release that was due from 'love man' parodies his sexual predator persona, but soon the work gives way to religious matters. the album was finally released by motown in 1981, remixed without gaye's wishes, adding the unfinished track 'far cry' and taking off the question mark in the title. this was instrumental in gaye's departure form the label to columbia, where he was to enjoy his final successes with the 'midnight love' album before his tragic death in 1984. this expanded edition brings together the released 'in our lifetime?' with the best possible version of the 'love man' album. it makes for a thrilling listen.
