JETTISON (Reissue)

JETTISON (Reissue)

With their new album Megafauna on the horizon and having been around for almost 20 years, Irish experimental freaks And So I Watch You From have continued to embrace new ideas and push the boundaries of their intricate and ecstatic guitar-based post-everything compositions. But nothing in their repertoire comes close to the ambition and scale of their 2022 multimedia long-form ensemble project Jettison. Jettison was conceived by And So I Watch You From Afar guitarist Rory Friers and brought to life by the band, orchestrator Connor O'Boyle, Arco String Quartet and visual artist Sam Wiehl. Jettison is a fusion of ASIWYFA's life-affirming musical acrobatics, the stirring grandeur of film music and the surreal and sublime possibilities of moving images. The stage for Jettison opens with the peaceful piano chords and orchestral sounds of "Dive Pt1" before things really get going with "Dive Pt2" where Friers and Kennedy are joined by their compatriots Chris Wee on drums and Johnny Adger on bass. From there, Jettison's 40-minute, nine-part journey traverses the various shades of ASIWYFA's euphoric instrumentals, infused with the ethereal elegance of the Arco String Quartet. Short snippets of cryptic dialogue from Emma Ruth Rundle and Neil Fallon are scattered throughout the album, leading the way for the listener like signposts, hinting at a larger story and further coloring the experience while adding a sense of mystery to the composition as a whole. Whether it's the staccato guitars and pedalboard manipulations of "Lung", the dubby bass and sparse folk melodies of "In Air", the anthemic spirit of "Emerge" or the perfect symbiosis of classic ASIWYFA electro jubilation and delicate grace of the Arco String Quartet, the various chapters of Jettison maintain the spirit and timbre of ASIWYFA while expanding the possibilities of their sound and saturating the senses with additional instrumentation. Rather, it is an ordinary ASIWYFA album a very conscious departure and not an evolutionary step towards an increasingly complex and conceptual work. The publication, which was previously only available in limited quantities, is now being reissued!
