I Guess I Just Wasn’t Made For These Grand Times

I Guess I Just Wasn’t Made For These Grand Times

If one Bristol album needed a tape release, you wouldn't need to look much further for a deserving candidate than Grand Times - 'I Guess I Wasn't Made For These Grand Times'. The project of Elastic Furniture alumnus Jake Healy that was originally released in 2020. Of the album Jake says:

"In the very strange times of 2020, I found myself in the possession of an original SP404 sampler (gifted by a friend) and also a week off from my job to spend at home which, due to the lockdown, I had already spent many many months with only occasional trips to the supermarket and one hour max allocated walks to break up the tedium.

I'd been listening to loads of vaporwave type-music plus loads of hip hop and got really into making weird loops and beats on the sampler, and decided with that week off work I was going to try and make a record within that timespan using only a turntable, my 8-track, the sampler and whatever records my housemates and me had to use.

I originally released the record on my friend Luca's Youtube channel Green Season in June 2020 to be deliberately obscure and used the handle "Grand Times" (one of my favourite phrases, the use of which got more and more misjudged during lockdown) and the title "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Grand Times" (a play on a Beach Boys song I hold very close to my heart). I wanted to put it out on cassette but it never happened, oh well - if anyone wants to help with that please get in touch.

It's a fun record, and my first jump into the use of turntables and samplers to make music which is almost the norm for me now. It makes me think of the excitement of making it, taking up our living room and having housemates come through to chat and checkout what i've been doing. Weird times. Fun times. Grand Times."
