Albums of the Year 2024 - Number 58 It’s been two years since Donkey Kid released his first (and only) EP (so far): “Distant Shouts” (2022), which saw him collaborate with Marco Kleebauer. Ever since, he’s been dropping individual tracks, merely hinting at the long-awaited debut full-length. The actual foundation for “HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION” was laid in autumn 2023, when the Berlin-based musician travelled to London to hook up with producer Dilip Harris. A few months later, back in January, things really started to take off when Donkey Kid and co-producer Bleac came up with several key song demos in his Berlin-Neukölln apartment. A few dozen studio sessions around Berlin, a two-week creative trip to the Odenwald mountain range, and several mixing/mastering sessions (with Kidney Paradise and Zino Mikorey) later, “HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION” was complete. The album title was a no-brainer – because it perfectly sums up the feeling Donkey Kid had as he was working on the music: there was this heavy burden, something heavy was pulling him down...
