Drugstore Rock and Roll

Drugstore Rock and Roll

While the names of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis come quickly to mind when thinking of the original rockabilly greats, there were also several girls who were rocking it with the boys, such as the great Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin. A Virginia native, Martin made a fistful of great rocking records that showed off her excellent voice and spunky enthusiasm to their best advantage. Her first and biggest hits were "Drugstore Rock and Roll" (selling some 750,000 copies) and the equally vibrant "My Boy Elvis". Presley and RCA were so impressed with Martin's stage presence that they dubbed her "the Female Elvis" for her dance moves on stage. Also, Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker, seeing potential for a 'boy/ girl' concert bill, offered to take over her management, but politely turned down by Martin's parents.

Janis Martin, lead vocals, plus: Chet Atkins (lead electric), Grady Martin, Bob Moore, Floyd Crame, Gradt Martin, Buddy Harman, The Jordanaires, among others. Recorded in Nashville and New York, 1956-60

Tracks: Drugstore Rock And Roll / Barefoot Baby / Will You, Willyum / Blues Keep Calling / Bang Bang / Ooby Dooby / Here Today And Gone Tomorrow Love / Hard Times Ahead / Little Bit / My Boy Elvis / Let's Elope Baby / Two Long Years / Billy Boy, Billy Boy / Love And Kisses / Cracker Jack / Teen Street / I'll Never Be Free / One More Year To Go / Please, Be My Love / All Right, Baby
