Breaking/Building Habits

Amalie Dahl’s ”Breaking/Building Habits” explores the relation between composition and improvisation in the creative aspects as well as in a live situation. The project’s starting point was for Amalie to try to compose in new ways. First step was creating a new group with 3 musicians she had not played with before, and a unique instrumentation. A goal was to be able to imagine new sounds and to fusion her improvised and composed vocabulary. The starting point for most of the compositions is made on the saxophone, going back and forth between improvising and composing, trying to create phrases and music not yet composed, and brining this approach to the rehersals as well as the concerts. This album is a result of this, recorded live with this consept as a foundation - and is the documentation of an extraordinary concert. Amalie Dahl is a saxophone player, composer and band leader based in Oslo, educated at NTNU in Trondheim with a master’s degree as a Nordic Composing Musician from 2024. Dahl has made a solid impression on the Nordic jazz scene with her distinct sound and strong integrity both as an improvising musician and as an impressive composer. During the last couple of years she has been highly visible through critically acclaimed projects, such as her own Amalie Dahl’s Dafnie, winning single of the year at the Danish Music Awards Jazz with a track from their album ”Står op med solen” (Sonic Transmission/Aguirre, 2024). She’s also active in bands such as Treen, SUPERSPREDER, Dahl/Dalen/Søvik, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Ingebright Håker Flaten’s (Exit) Knarr - to mention a few.
